Electoral Act Amendment: Don’t speak for INEC on electronic transmission — David Mark to Akpabio

Chairman of African Democratic Congress Criticizes Senate President’s Comments on Electoral Act Amendment

David Mark, Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has issued a strong response to remarks made by Senate President Godswill Akpabio concerning the ongoing debate on the Electoral Act Amendment.

Mark spoke on Saturday during the launch of “The Burdens of Legislators in Nigeria,” a book by former Senator Effiong Bob, held at the Nigerian Air Force Conference Centre in Kado, Abuja.

He urged Akpabio to represent the National Assembly rather than the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Mark underscored the public’s demand for the implementation of real-time electronic transmission of election results.

“Let INEC decide whether they can do it or not. Don’t speak for INEC. Speak for the National Assembly,” Mark said. “What the public wants is electronic transmission. If INEC cannot do it, that is their problem, not ours.”

Mark characterized the debate over INEC’s capacity as a secondary issue, emphasizing that the legislative focus should be on passing the law to facilitate electronic transmission of results.
