‘End of an era’ for reigning premiers

Richmond’s hopes of achieving four premierships in five years appear over after the Tigers were thrashed at the hands of the GWS Giants by 39 points at Marvel Stadium.

The Giants tonight outscored the reigning premiers seven goals to two in the opening quarter, and from there GWS never looked back as they cruised to a 16.10 (106) to 10.7 (67) win.

The win for the Giants bumps them up to the seventh spot on the AFL ladder, while the Tigers, who would’ve jumped into the eight had they won, remain at the 11th spot.

With one game remaining for the Tigers, not only will they need a win next week, but a number of results will need to go their way over the remainder of Round 22 and next week’s Round 23 to sneak in.

Most importantly for the Tigers, they will need Fremantle to beat West Coast this weekend, with the Eagles currently sitting four points clear in the eighth spot.

West Coast must lose its next two games for the Tigers to remain a chance of sneaking into the top eight.

But according to AFL great Garry Lyon, it’s virtually all over now for the Tigers.

“This is the end of an era for Richmond. They’ve lost six out of eight and we keep saying they’re going to come back, it just comes, time comes,” Lyon told Fox Footy at half-time.

“Now they’re looking at it going can we win a premiership? Probably not. Do we want to play finals? Yeah we do, but that’s going to extend the season. All of that can manifest.

“I know I’m reading a lot into it but when you see the half we saw last week against North and then you come out with the season on the line and give up a 50-point margin at half-time [against GWS], it just says they’re tired to me and they’re coming to an end.”
