Ex-military chief gives reasons bandits kidnap people

Former Commander Warns of Bandits’ Tactics in Nigeria
Maj. Gen. Anthony Atolagbe, a retired commander of Operation Safe Haven, has expressed serious concerns regarding the tactics employed by bandits in Nigeria. During a recent interview on Arise Television’s “Prime Time,” Atolagbe outlined how these criminal groups are increasingly using kidnapped individuals as human shields to evade military operations.
Atolagbe, speaking about the ongoing insecurity in the country, noted that bandits often take hostages not only for exploitation but also for negotiations. He emphasized that their strategies involve frequently moving to new locations to avoid military engagement, leading to more abductions.
“In places like Sambisa, we have seen some captives escape due to increased pressure on these groups,” he said. He added that when bandits lose contact with their captives, they look for new individuals to abduct as they relocate.
Atolagbe also highlighted the implications of these tactics for military operations, suggesting that the bandits may use hostages as protection when facing military forces.
“This pattern of behavior indicates a calculated approach by these groups,” he said, underscoring the complexity of addressing the ongoing violence and kidnappings in Nigeria.
As security forces continue their efforts to combat banditry, Atolagbe’s insights shed light on the evolving challenges posed by these criminal organizations.
