Pakistan Edges Out Netherlands by Three Wickets in T20 World Cup Opener
Colombo, Sri Lanka — Pakistan secured a narrow three-wicket victory over the Netherlands in their opening match of the 2026 Twenty20 World Cup on Saturday, managing to clinch the win with just three balls to spare.
After being put to bat first, the Dutch team was bowled out for 147, with only one delivery remaining in their innings at Colombo’s Sinhalese Sports Club ground. In response, Pakistan’s chase was tense, and the Dutch bowlers performed admirably, but a late surge from Faheem Ashraf proved decisive.
Ashraf scored a brisk 29 runs off just 11 balls, providing the impetus needed to seal the win. His performance came into sharp focus after a missed catch by Max O’Dowd, which allowed him to continue and ultimately secure Pakistan’s victory.
The match was crucial for Pakistan as they face limited options in their quest to qualify for the Super 8 stage. This need was exacerbated by the decision to boycott their upcoming group match against rivals India scheduled for February 15.
The Netherlands made a commendable effort with the ball, particularly after losing their openers early on. Bas de Leede contributed 30 runs, while captain Scott Edwards added 37. However, the team faltered in the final overs, losing six wickets for just 20 runs.
Pakistan’s innings began shakily, with the team at a precarious 119-7 after 18 overs. Babar Azam, often criticized for his slow scoring rate in T20s, added only 15 runs. However, Ashraf’s late flourish, which included a six and a four to secure the win, highlighted the excitement of the match.
Pakistan’s bowlers also played a pivotal role, with Saim Ayub taking two wickets, helping to contain the Netherlands to a subpar total. Ayub also contributed with the bat during Pakistan’s chase, but was dismissed by Dutch spinner Aryan Dutta, who had a notable impact on the game.
With the victory, Pakistan will look to build momentum as they continue in the tournament.
