FCT council election: Police restrict movement ahead of Feb 21 election

FCT Police Enforce 12-Hour Movement Restriction Ahead of Elections

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has announced a 12-hour restriction on movement in Abuja on February 21 to facilitate the Area Councils’ elections. The restriction will be in effect from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Public Relations Officer SP Josephine Adeh confirmed the measure on Wednesday, stating that it will exempt essential service providers and individuals actively participating in the electoral process.

Adeh noted that extensive security measures have been implemented throughout the territory to ensure a peaceful election. The operation involves collaboration among multiple security agencies, including the Nigerian military, the Department of State Services, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.

“The agencies involved in the deployment include the Nigeria Army, Nigeria Air Force, Nigeria Navy, Department of State Services (DSS), and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), among others,” Adeh said.

In line with the security operation, FCT Commissioner of Police CP Miller Dantawaye has instructed officers to act with professionalism and respect for citizens’ rights during their duties.

“He also advised officers to remain vigilant, impartial, and courteous while upholding the rights of all citizens,” Adeh added.

The commissioner has called on residents to cooperate with security personnel and adhere to operational guidelines during the elections. He reassured voters that sufficient security measures are in place to support a free, fair, and peaceful election process, encouraging them to participate without apprehension.

Dantawaye further urged the public to remain observant and report any suspicious activities via the police emergency lines: 08032003913 and 08061581938.
