Federal Government Rewards D’Tigress for AfroBasket Victory
The Federal Government has met its commitments to the Nigerian women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, following their success at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Championship. The team secured the title by defeating Mali 78-64 in the final, held in August.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved a cash award equivalent to $100,000 for each player, as well as $50,000 for the head coach and members of the technical staff. Additionally, each player and technical crew member was bestowed with the title of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON).
As part of the rewards, Tinubu directed that one flat be allocated to each player, coach, and member of the technical team.
The official documentation for the flats and national honors was presented to the players and technical staff on Monday by Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the National Sports Commission, and Bukola Olopade, Director General of the commission, in Lyon, France.
Currently, D’Tigress is competing in the qualifying tournament for the 2026 FIBA Women’s World Cup, also taking place in Lyon.
