Fire engulfs De Bently Hotel in Abuja

Fire Contained at Abuja Hotel, No Casualties Reported
The Federal Fire Service successfully contained a fire outbreak at De Bently Hotel in Utako, Abuja, preventing the flames from spreading to adjacent buildings.
The incident occurred at approximately 8:28 p.m. on Monday, March 9, 2026, when a blaze engulfed the four-storey commercial structure, covering around 500 square meters.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Paul Abraham, the National Public Relations Officer and Head of Corporate Services, reported that firefighters from the Wuse Fire Station were dispatched to the scene. They arrived by 8:38 p.m. and commenced firefighting efforts under the supervision of Olumode Adeyemi, the Controller General of the Federal Fire Service.
Firefighters utilized multiple water jets and fire tenders in a coordinated effort, ultimately bringing the fire under control. Preliminary assessments suggest the fire may have been initiated by a gas explosion; however, investigations are ongoing to confirm the exact cause.
The estimated value of the property affected by the fire is approximately N1 billion. The report indicated that assets worth about N650 million were saved, while damages amounting to roughly N350 million were incurred.
Emergency responders confirmed that there were no casualties or injuries related to the incident. Police patrol teams and additional firefighting units were also deployed to provide security and operational assistance.
Adeyemi commended the firefighters for their prompt and professional response, stating that their actions prevented a potentially more devastating situation.
In light of the incident, a team of fire investigators has been assigned to determine both the immediate and underlying causes of the fire. The Federal Fire Service emphasized the importance of adherence to fire safety regulations, particularly in the handling of gas cylinders and other combustible materials.
