Fire kills miners, destroys shops at Katsina gold processing site

Fire Breaks Out in Katsina State Gold Processing Area
KATSINA, Nigeria — A fire early Sunday morning at a gold processing site in Katsina State destroyed multiple shops and resulted in casualties.
The blaze ignited while many residents were still asleep, with some beginning their daily routines of washing and processing gold. According to a report from local station Alfijir Radio, a resident noted that two individuals were believed to have been caught in the fire. At the time of reporting, one person was injured, and one body had been recovered.
The fire severely damaged nearly all shops supplying tools and materials vital for thousands of young workers engaged in gold processing. These materials are utilized to process gold extracted from the surrounding forests to the west of the town. Dantsuntsu is situated in the western part of Batsari Local Government Area.
The region surrounding Dantsuntsu consists primarily of farmland leading into the Zamfara forest, which lacks significant settlements. Gold is mined from the rocks and soil in that forest area and transported into town via motorcycle for processing.
Within Dantsuntsu, hundreds of grinding machines are employed to crush the rocks, while workers process the crushed materials to extract gold. The area attracts individuals from various parts of Nigeria, as well as workers from neighboring countries, including Niger, Chad, and Cameroon.
As of now, no official statement has been issued regarding the incident.
