Fire razes two markets in Yobe

Two Fires in Yobe State Cause Extensive Property Damage

Bade and Karasuwa local government areas in Yobe State were struck by two separate fire incidents, resulting in substantial property losses estimated in millions of naira.

The Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) reported that the first fire ignited around 9:20 p.m. on March 4 at Kara Market, located near the Federal University Gashua. The blaze consumed large quantities of animal feed and firewood, devastating traders’ inventories within hours. Fortunately, no injuries or fatalities were reported. However, the economic impact is significant, as many families rely on market activities for their livelihoods.

In a different incident, a fire erupted at approximately 3:00 p.m. on March 5, affecting the Karasuwa Garun Guna cyclic market and nearby Mattafari village. The fire destroyed three shops and 12 stalls, leaving at least 61 individuals without their primary sources of income.

SEMA has dispatched assessment teams to both sites to evaluate the damage and recommend immediate, medium, and long-term solutions. The agency expressed concern over the recurring fire outbreaks in the state, which often catch residents off guard. These incidents not only lead to significant losses of commercial and residential properties but also exacerbate the challenges faced by vulnerable households.
