Cutty Sark, Greenwich
Not just a type of whisky, its namesake is the world’s only surviving extreme clipper: a merchant cargo ship that sacrificed capacity for speed. Notable for a long, narrow hull, a sharp bow for cutting through waves, and three masts, this type of ship would have crisscrossed the oceans bringing back goods from lands afar. The Cutty Sark – which takes its name from a poem by Robert Burns – is 150 years old. Today, the ship is home to the world’s biggest collection of figureheads, the carved wooden figures that adorn ships’ prows. Closest Station: Greenwich, Thameslink
