FRSC marshal, driver killed while rescuing accident victims in Edo

Traffic Incident Claims Lives in Edo State

A traffic marshal from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and a driver were killed in a road accident during a rescue operation in the Oviogie community along the Benin-Ore Road in Edo State. The incident occurred on Thursday, February 19, 2026.

Cyril Mathew, the Edo State Sector Commander of the FRSC, confirmed the details of the incident to reporters on Friday, February 20, 2026, in Benin City.

Mathew explained that the situation began with an initial road crash, which prompted marshals and emergency responders to the scene. While they were conducting the rescue operation, another vehicle collided with the site, striking those assisting the victims.

“The impact of the second crash led to the death of an FRSC marshal involved in the rescue effort and a driver who was present at the scene,” Mathew stated.

Further complicating the situation, some drivers mistakenly blamed the FRSC personnel for the initial crash and reportedly attacked them, escalating tensions and creating chaos at the scene.

The tragic incident caused severe traffic congestion along the busy Benin-Lagos Road, significantly disrupting the movement of commuters and commercial vehicles for several hours.

A driver, who identified himself only as Iyobor, spoke to reporters about the first accident. He attributed it to the alleged indiscriminate parking of trucks along the expressway near the FRSC office. “Many motorists have rammed into these trucks at various times, resulting in deaths or severe damage to their vehicles,” he said. Iyobor suggested that the attack on the marshals stemmed from accumulated frustrations among drivers.
