Fuel subsidy removal: Criticism from Nigerians was high voltage – Tinubu

President Tinubu Addresses Fuel Subsidy Criticism

President Bola Tinubu acknowledged the intense criticism surrounding the removal of fuel subsidies, describing the backlash as “high voltage.” He asserted that despite the objections from various sectors of Nigerian society, the decision has benefited the country.

Tinubu made these remarks during an interfaith breaking of fast event attended by members of the House of Representatives on Friday. He expressed concern that many Nigerians struggle to grasp the rationale behind both the subsidy removal and the floating of the naira.

“It was initially very difficult for people to understand my direction regarding these issues,” Tinubu stated. He noted that, despite the significant criticism, no one from his party suggested reversing the subsidy removal or altering the currency floatation policy. “I am glad we are out of the dark tunnel,” he added.

He commended the collaboration among lawmakers, stating that their support inspired him to persist through the challenges. “The heat was high voltage from the critics, but today we are better off for it,” he said.

In closing, Tinubu remarked that the support of his colleagues merits consideration for a second term, pending approval from their respective parties.
