Fulani group accuses military personnel of killing nine cows in Plateau community

The Gan Allah Fulani Development Association of Nigeria (GAFDAN) has accused military personnel of killing nine cows belonging to Fulani herdsmen in an unprovoked attack in the Tangoron community of Bassa Local Government Area, Plateau State.

In a statement posted on their Facebook page, GAFDAN asserted that the incident occurred on March 2, 2026, while the herdsmen were grazing their cattle. According to the organization, soldiers attacked the herdsmen, resulting in the shooting of the livestock.

The statement, titled “Unprovoked Attack on Grazing Herders and Their Livestock by Military Officers,” details that the soldiers allegedly fired on the cattle in the evening. It claims that the military personnel moved from Maiyanga prior to the shooting.

Community sources cited in the statement indicated that there was no provocation or prior confrontation. The report noted that two cattle died immediately, two were subsequently euthanized due to injuries, and five others sustained serious wounds. GAFDAN called for an immediate investigation, accountability, and compensation for the affected livestock owners, emphasizing the importance of livestock as a primary source of livelihood for the community.

In response, Captain Chinonso Oteh, spokesperson for Operation Enduring Peace (OPEP), denied knowledge of the incident during a telephone interview with DAILY POST. “I can categorically say that such an incident never occurred, as there have not been any confrontations with Fulani herders in Plateau communities recently,” Oteh stated.

He added that while no such incident took place, an investigation into the matter would still be conducted.
