Iran Holds Funeral for Key Defense Figure Ali Shamkhani
TEHRAN—Iran conducted a funeral on March 15, 2026, for Ali Shamkhani, a prominent figure in the country’s defense establishment, who was killed in strikes attributed to Israeli and U.S. forces on February 28.
Shamkhani served as the chief of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council and played a significant role in nuclear discussions. He also acted as an advisor to the late Supreme Leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Notably, Shamkhani survived an Israeli assassination attempt in June 2025, which resulted in the loss of a leg.
The funeral took place amid heightened tensions in the region, reflecting the ongoing complex dynamics involving Iran, Israel, and the United States.
