Gas leakage fire razes two-storey building in Lagos

Several properties worth millions of naira were destroyed in a fire that gutted a two-storey building at number 21, Oduntan Street, Mushin area of Lagos State on Saturday.

The affected building comprises two units of 3-bedroom flats. The second floor was gutted by fire, which reportedly started in the front flat and escalated to the back flat.

The raging fire, which started mid-afternoon, was subsequently put out by men of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, in collaboration with the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, and Nigeria Police, among other rescue teams.

According to Permanent Secretary, LASEMA, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, preliminary investigations conducted by the agency’s Eagle response team attributed the immediate cause of the fire to gas leakage from a gas cylinder in one of the flats on the second floor.

Fortunately, there was no loss of life and no injuries sustained as a result of the incident.

“The quick response and intervention of LASEMA’s Eagle Response Team alongside LRU Fire Unit, and other responders curtailed the fire from spreading to other buildings, while officials of the Nigeria Police Force secured the incident area, and conducted crowd control.

The entire roof and ceilings were razed by the fire. The personal belongings of the occupants were equally razed.

Valuables and money discovered by the LRU fire fighters during the Search and Rescue Operation was handed over to the owners immediately at the incident scene.

Occupants of the affected building were sensitized on the safe use of gas cylinders, electrical appliances, and necessary their repairs to prevent future incidents,” Oke-Osanyintolu stated
