Gateway Airport: Ogun targets international operations, to begin with Hajj

Ogun State Government Moves to Launch International Passenger Services at Gateway International Airport
The Ogun State Government is making significant strides toward launching international passenger services at the Gateway International Airport, starting with Hajj flights to Saudi Arabia.
This initiative is part of a larger strategy to enhance aviation infrastructure and stimulate economic growth in Ogun and the broader South-West region of Nigeria. As the state nears the operationalization of the airport, officials emphasize its role as a strategic hub intended to serve businesses and travelers within Ogun and surrounding states.
Governor Dapo Abiodun has engaged in high-level discussions with federal agencies essential for facilitating the launch of international operations, including Hajj flights and cargo services. These conversations aim to ensure that the airport meets all regulatory and operational standards prior to its international debut.
Key focus areas in the discussions include security measures, the deployment of specialized personnel, passenger processing systems, and compliance with regulations monitored by the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority. To oversee this effort, the governor has appointed Capt. Dapo Olumide, Consultant on Aviation Matters and Accountable Manager of Gateway International Airport, to lead consultations with relevant federal agencies.
Capt. Olumide has initiated meetings with leadership from the Nigeria Immigration Service, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, and the Nigeria Customs Service. These meetings aim to facilitate the necessary operational infrastructure and personnel for international passenger and cargo operations.
Gateway International Airport is anticipated to enhance regional connectivity and support pilgrimage travel, particularly for Hajj. Officials believe the facility will also bolster international trade through improved cargo movement and greater access for investors in Ogun State.
Once fully operational, the airport is expected to complement existing aviation facilities in the South-West, including the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, positioning Ogun State as an emerging center for aviation-related commerce and logistics.
