Nigerian singer Timaya has recently expressed his views on parenthood and marriage, igniting controversy in a viral video clip.

The artist, known for his popular song “Dem Mama,” was seen discussing the merits of having children outside of wedlock, asserting that marriage is ineffective. Timaya, alongside fellow musician Paul Okoye, also known as Rudeboy, appeared to be offering marital counsel to their colleague Phyno during the video segment.

“Just born pikin, pikin go grow. This marriage thing no dey work,” Timaya remarked in Pidgin English, which prompted varied reactions from those present in the footage.

The video has sparked a lively debate on social media, with many users expressing disagreement with Timaya’s views regarding marriage.

Timaya, a father of four, has children with three different women. His daughters, Emmanuella and Gracey, are from his relationship with Barbara Fumnaya Nwaokolo, while he shares his son Emmanuel with Tamar and his youngest child, Maya, with Dunnie Onasanya.

In a 2024 interview with Naija FM, Timaya discussed his unmarried status in his 40s, noting that he has never felt compelled to marry. He did, however, indicate that his perspective on the institution of marriage could evolve in the future.
