Health agency urges calm as Kano records surge in respiratory infections

Kano State Reports Increase in Respiratory Infections

KANO, Nigeria – The Kano State Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (KNCDC) has reported a rise in cases of respiratory infections throughout the state, urging residents to remain calm and avoid unnecessary panic.

In a public health advisory issued on Thursday, the KNCDC indicated an increase in upper respiratory tract infections, with reported symptoms including cough, sore throat, fever, and nasal congestion in various communities.

Prof. Muhammad Abbas, the Director-General of KNCDC, emphasized that the increase does not suggest the emergence of any new COVID-19 variant in the state. He noted that most reported cases are mild and typically resolve within seven to ten days without serious complications.

“We have observed a rise in upper respiratory tract infections across the state, but there are currently no confirmed cases of any COVID-19 variant in Kano. Residents should remain calm and avoid unnecessary panic,” the advisory stated.

The agency also encouraged residents to seek medical care if symptoms worsen or persist, particularly in cases involving high fever lasting more than three days, chest pain, or difficulty breathing. It highlighted that certain groups, including children under five, the elderly, pregnant women, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions such as asthma, diabetes, and HIV, are at greater risk for complications.

In addition, the KNCDC urged the public to adhere to preventive measures, including regular handwashing, proper cough etiquette, adequate indoor ventilation, and avoiding close contact with sick individuals. The agency emphasized the importance of keeping routine immunizations up to date to help curb the spread of infections.
