Illegal dumping: LAWMA seizes waste carts, arrests suspect on Lagos Island

Lagos Waste Management Authority Intensifies Efforts Against Illegal Waste Disposal
LAGOS, Nigeria – The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) confiscated several refuse carts and arrested one individual during a pre-dawn enforcement operation on Lagos Island aimed at combating illegal waste disposal.
The operation took place early Monday morning, following weeks of surveillance focused on unauthorized waste-handling practices in the area. LAWMA officials indicated that the initiative seeks to halt the unregulated movement of waste and prevent the resurgence of illegal dump sites previously reclaimed by the authority.
Enforcement officers intercepted multiple waste carts at Isale-Eko. In a separate incident at approximately 1:31 a.m., law enforcement apprehended 42-year-old Muritala Suleiman, a native of Zamfara State, for illegally dumping waste at Tinubu Square.
A LAWMA spokesperson noted that the timing of the operation was intentional, as offenders often take advantage of darkness and reduced visibility to evade detection.
Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, emphasized that the ongoing enforcement efforts are designed to reinforce deterrence and protect areas that have been stabilized from further abuse. He stated that operatives from the Waste Investigation, Surveillance, and Enforcement unit have been strategically positioned throughout the state to dismantle persistent environmental hazards and promote cleanliness along major routes.
LAWMA urged residents to strictly adhere to approved waste disposal methods and to support initiatives aimed at maintaining a clean, safe, and sustainable urban environment.
