‘I’m FCT gov’ – Wike defends curfew during council election

Minister Justifies Curfew During FCT Local Council Elections
ABUJA — Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, defended the imposition of a curfew during the recent local council elections in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), stating that he has the authority to do so.
In a monthly media briefing on Monday, Wike emphasized that the measures taken during the February 21 elections were for security reasons and did not interfere with the voting outcomes.
“I have the rights as the governor of 3,000 polling units. For security reasons, I need to figure out what’s happening,” Wike remarked. He added that his role as Chief Security Officer allows him to stay informed about the electoral process.
Wike addressed concerns regarding his movements during the elections, noting that although the FCT contains approximately 3,000 polling units, visiting a limited number would not have an impact on the overall election. “If I visited 10 polling units to see what was happening, how would that impact the other 3,000 polling units?” he asked.
He reiterated that his focus was on ensuring a secure environment rather than participating as a candidate, highlighting the importance of overseeing the electoral process from a security standpoint.
