Immigration arrests suspected trafficker, rescues six women at Seme border

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has apprehended a suspected human trafficker and rescued six young women during an operation along the Seme-Badagry corridor in Lagos State.
This operation was executed by the Lagos State Border Patrol Command in collaboration with various security agencies, as part of ongoing efforts to address irregular migration and transnational crime in the area.
The suspect, 24-year-old Victor Jennifer from Benue State, was arrested on Wednesday, February 4, while allegedly attempting to transport the women, aged between 20 and 23, across the border without valid travel documents.
The NIS disclosed this development in a statement issued on Tuesday. According to the agency, the Seme corridor has been identified as a key route for human trafficking and other cross-border criminal activities, necessitating continuous surveillance and intelligence-led operations.
Following the arrest, both the suspect and the rescued individuals were taken to the NIS Zonal Office, Zone ‘A’ Headquarters in Ikeja for preliminary investigations. They were subsequently transferred to the NIS Headquarters in Abuja on February 6 for further inquiries and necessary actions.
The NIS confirmed that the suspect will face prosecution under existing laws, aiming to deter others engaged in similar acts.
Mohammed Adamu, Assistant Comptroller-General of Immigration and Zonal Coordinator for Zone ‘A’, emphasized the agency’s commitment to combatting human trafficking and irregular migration. “The Nigeria Immigration Service maintains a zero tolerance policy for these issues, as well as other forms of transnational organized crimes,” he stated. “We are dedicated to safeguarding Nigeria’s borders and protecting vulnerable individuals from exploitation.”
Adamu also assured the public of ongoing vigilance across Nigeria’s border corridors, highlighting the importance of interagency collaboration in addressing cross-border crimes. The NIS noted that this successful operation aligns with current reforms and new strategies under the leadership of Comptroller General of Immigration Kemi Nanna Nandap, aimed at improving border management, intelligence operations, and national security.
