Modi’s Visit to Israel Sparks Domestic Criticism Amid Gaza Tensions
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Israel has been met with domestic backlash as controversy surrounds the ongoing conflict in Gaza. During his two-day visit, which concluded Thursday, Modi discussed enhanced collaboration with Israeli officials on defense technology and outlined plans for a free trade agreement.
In a joint press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem, the leaders emphasized cooperation in emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence and cybersecurity. They reported the conclusion of over a dozen bilateral agreements aimed at strengthening ties between the two nations.
“The future belongs to those who innovate, and Israel and India are bent on innovation,” Netanyahu stated. “We are proud ancient civilizations, very proud of our past, but absolutely determined to seize the future, and we can do it better together.”
A joint statement from the leaders underscored a commitment to “horizon scanning,” a strategy intended to identify global trends across technology, economy, and society by leveraging data analysis. Additionally, Israel agreed to increase the number of Indian nationals permitted entry into the country by 50,000. Many South Asian workers have filled roles in construction and caregiving, particularly since new restrictions were placed on Palestinian labor due to the ongoing conflict.
Despite the purported economic gains, Modi’s visit attracted criticism at home, reflecting India’s evolving relationship with Israel amid the backdrop of the Gaza conflict, which has resulted in significant loss of life. Reports indicate that over 72,000 people in Gaza have died as a result of the violence, raising moral concerns about India’s growing ties with Israel.
The leaders’ statement referenced the Hamas-led attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, as well as a separate attack in April 2025 in Pahalgam, Kashmir. Modi reiterated his stance against terrorism, asserting that it “cannot be accepted in any form or expression.” Historically, Modi has supported the establishment of a Palestinian state but has often refrained from criticizing Israel in international forums.
Earlier this month, India joined other nations in condemning Israeli actions aimed at consolidating control over the occupied West Bank. Modi and Netanyahu also expressed support for a ceasefire plan proposed by U.S. President Donald Trump to stabilize conditions in the Gaza Strip.
