Analysts Warn of Wider Consequences from U.S.-Israel Offensive Against Iran
The ongoing hostilities between Iran and a coalition of U.S. and Israeli forces could have significant repercussions beyond the Middle East, a lecturer from Sokoto University warned. This statement comes in the wake of a coordinated military operation launched by the United States and Israel on Saturday.
The offensive targeted military and strategic assets across Iran, including command centers and government buildings, despite ongoing discussions concerning Iran’s nuclear program.
In response, Iran executed missile and drone attacks across the Middle East, targeting Israel and nations hosting U.S. military personnel, including Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Iraq. Reports indicated explosions and intercepted missiles as part of Tehran’s retaliation.
In an exclusive interview on Sunday, Shehu Arzika, the Sokoto lecturer, emphasized that the current crisis stems from deep historical and geopolitical roots that extend beyond religious differences. He expressed concerns that the conflict could destabilize global peace, oil markets, and international relations.
Arzika noted that since 1945, Israel has sought to occupy areas it considers divinely ordained. This belief has influenced Israel’s approach to its neighbor nations. He explained that Israel employs both diplomatic and military strategies in its dealings, often leveraging U.S. support to bolster its military initiatives.
Moreover, Arzika pointed out that religious affiliations appear secondary to the geopolitical landscape, as several Muslim-majority countries maintain cooperative relations with Israel. He asserted that the conflict is primarily driven by historical tensions and global power dynamics.
According to Arzika, the ultimate goal appears to be the neutralization of any leader capable of challenging Israel’s position in the region. He warned that continued actions against Iran could have far-reaching implications, potentially escalating to a larger global conflict.
Recent retaliatory attacks attributed to Iran have already resulted in casualties among U.S. personnel and in several neighboring countries. Arzika underscored the unpredictability of the situation, emphasizing that the U.S. remains a dominant global influence, with allies likely to support its actions, regardless of international law.
He cautioned that increased military intervention against Iran could follow. The conflict’s implications for global oil markets are also a significant concern, given that Iran and its neighbors are major oil exporters. Arzika highlighted that threats to block the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping route, could lead to rising oil prices globally.
Monday saw a sharp increase in oil prices, with Brent crude rising more than 13% to $82 per barrel, the highest level in 14 months. This spike occurred amid growing fears over the security of the Strait of Hormuz, critical for global oil shipments.
Arzika also remarked on the recent reported death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, which he claimed was a significant setback for the country, potentially resulting in a shift in the balance of power. He emphasized the uncertainty surrounding the conflict’s fallout and the potential for further escalation involving additional nations.
“The future remains unpredictable,” he said, acknowledging the precarious nature of ongoing events.
