Gulf Countries Face Increased Iranian Attacks Amid Escalating US-Israel Military Actions
Gulf nations remain on high alert as Iran continues to launch drone and missile strikes across the region. This escalation follows ongoing military actions by the United States and Israel, which have intensified since a war was declared against Iran on Saturday.
Late Thursday, Kuwait, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates reported multiple Iranian attacks. The Kuwaiti army stated via social media that air defenses were activated to intercept incoming projectiles over its airspace.
Earlier that day, Qatar’s Ministry of Defence confirmed the country was targeted by 14 ballistic missiles and four drones originating from Iran.
Iran’s assault, initially focused on US military assets in the Gulf, has broadened to include civilian infrastructure. As of now, Iranian state media report that the conflict has resulted in the deaths of at least 1,230 individuals, including six US service members, 11 in Israel, and three in the UAE.
The attacks have disrupted oil and gas operations, causing prices to surge as commercial tankers remain stalled near the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial conduit for about 20 percent of the world’s crude oil.
In reporting from Doha, Al Jazeera correspondent Laura Khan noted heightened military activity: “Air defense missiles lit up the night sky in Abu Dhabi,” she stated, indicating the significant number of drones and missiles targeting the UAE.
Bahrain also faced incursions, with the country’s main oil refinery hit by a missile strike, causing a fire that was swiftly controlled, according to local authorities. No injuries were reported at the Bapco Energies facility, and operations continued as officials assessed the damage.
Arab Gulf leaders have condemned the Iranian strikes, asserting that they violate international law. In a joint statement with the US, they affirmed their right to self-defense against these attacks.
In response to the escalating hostilities, the US has pledged to sustain its military operations against Iran. Additionally, some diplomatic missions in the region have temporarily suspended services, including the US embassy in Kuwait City, amid security concerns following recent attacks.
