Joe Allen: Swansea City midfielder set for Wales return

Pembrokeshire-born Allen was a highly influential figure for Wales before retiring, winning 74 caps and earning a place in Uefa’s team of the tournament at Euro 2016 as Wales reached the semi-finals.

He said in the lead-up to Euro 2024 – which Wales ended up missing after a play-off defeat by Poland – that he would “never say no” to Rob Page had Bellamy’s predecessor asked him to come out of international retirement.

Former Wales midfielder Owain Tudur Jones said last week it was a “no-brainer” to recall Allen, while ex-Wales striker Sam Vokes also welcomed the idea.

Swansea head coach Luke Williams said last week Allen was “excited” by the prospect of a Wales return.

Wales resume their Nations League campaign in Iceland on 11 October, before hosting Montenegro three days later.

The Bellamy era started promisingly last month, with a goalless home draw against Turkey followed by a 2-1 win in Montenegro.
