Jubilation as Nigerian Governor Increases Allowances of Security Operatives
Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State has announced an increase in financial support for volunteers working to enhance community safety in the region. The allowances for members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), as well as Vigilantes, Hunters, and Neighbourhood Watch groups, have been raised from ₦30,000 to ₦50,000 monthly. This increase reflects the government’s commitment to supporting those who risk their lives in maintaining security and restoring peace in Borno, a state deeply affected by violence and insurgency.
The announcement was made by Dauda Iliya, the governor’s special adviser on media, confirming that leaders of these volunteer groups would now receive ₦150,000 each. The initiative is expected to significantly impact the volunteers’ livelihoods, with a revised monthly expenditure of ₦232.4 million already in effect. Alerts for the increased allowances have started to be issued to the volunteers.
Reactions from the public have been largely supportive of Governor Zulum’s initiative. Citizens appreciate the governor’s effort to provide financial stability to those contributing to local security. Suleiman Aliyu commended the decision, stating that the increased support would help deter members of the CJTF from engaging in social vices, thereby promoting community stability. Similarly, Aliyu Abdulmalik praised the governor’s efforts but urged him to extend similar financial considerations to Corp members in the state, whom he described as crucial for educational development and community awareness.
Salees Ibrahim Kantoma also expressed gratitude toward the governor, acknowledging his commitment to improving the welfare of the volunteers. However, not all feedback was positive; some citizens, like Mohammed Satomi, called for the dismissal of the chairman of the North East Development Commission, alleging mismanagement and lack of effective support for development projects in the region. Satomi’s comments highlighted broader concerns regarding governance and resource allocation in Borno.
In the backdrop of these local developments regarding safety and governance, international dynamics also play a role in Borno’s security landscape. The United States Department of War has issued a statement expressing gratitude toward the Nigerian government for its cooperation following recent airstrikes against Islamic State-linked militants in the north-west. The U.S. has signaled a willingness to continue military action against such threats, showcasing a growing collaboration between Washington and Abuja under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Overall, Governor Zulum’s decision to increase volunteer allowances is seen as a vital step towards empowering local security forces in a region struggling with insurgencies. The widespread public support for his decision indicates a collective acknowledgment of the hardships faced by these individuals and the critical role they play in maintaining order in Borno. As community safety remains a priority, additional financial support and effective governance will be crucial in addressing ongoing challenges in the region.
