Justin Rose six clear at Farmers Insurance Open and as he chases 13th PGA win

Justin Rose is poised to clinch his 13th PGA Tour victory, having increased his lead to six shots at the Farmers Insurance Open after a solid performance on Saturday. The 45-year-old golfer maintained control throughout the tournament, initially leading by four shots following the second round. On the challenging South Course at Torrey Pines, Rose recorded an impressive four-under-par 68, bringing his total score to 21-under for the event, which places him significantly ahead of the competition.

American Joel Dahmen trails Rose in second place, positioned two shots ahead of the rest of the field after his own solid round of 68, which included five birdies but also a bogey. Rose’s commanding performance marks the largest 54-hole lead in the tournament since Tiger Woods had an eight-shot lead back in 2008. The tournament’s historical winning score stands at 22 under, recorded by Woods in 1999 and George Burns in 1987.

Expressing his thoughts on the high stakes, Dahmen remarked on the challenges Rose presents, suggesting that only unforeseen circumstances might offer him a chance to catch up. “My only hope is if he doesn’t set his alarm or he somehow starts hitting in the rough on the back nine maybe,” Dahmen quipped. Acknowledging Rose’s excellence, he expressed satisfaction at securing second place.

Rose’s last PGA victory came in August when he won the FedEx St Jude Championship. Having previously shown strong form with rounds of 62 and 65, he seemed to dominate the tournament. However, he faced minor setbacks with bogeys on the 11th, 12th, and 16th holes, which dented what had been an impressive eight-shot lead.

Reflecting on his consistent performance, Rose attributed his success to the favorable weather and the quality of the golf course, stating, “There’s never going to be any complacency.” He emphasized the importance of maintaining focus and respect for the game, noting the need to approach the final round with determination.

Meanwhile, former LIV Golf player Brooks Koepka made his return to the PGA Tour but struggled with a one-over-par 73, placing him in a tie for 61st. Irish golfer Seamus Power, who was four shots behind Rose after the second round, saw his chances diminish significantly with a disappointing third-round score of 74, leaving him ten strokes back from the leader.

As Rose heads into the final day of the tournament, he remains in an advantageous position, with a substantial lead and the confidence that comes from his recent accomplishments. With the chance for history on the line, all eyes will be on him to see if he can secure the victory and potentially match the tournament’s winning record.
