Kalu: Group demands thorough probe after LPDC dismissal of NYSC controversy

Calls for Investigation in Kalu Controversy Ahead of Abia Governorship Election

ABUJA – The Save Nigeria Movement (SNM) and the Freelance Journalists Federation (FJF) have demanded a comprehensive investigation following the confirmation by the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee that Benjamin Okezie Kalu, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, did not participate in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) during his time at the Nigerian Law School.

This development stems from a petition filed by lawyer John Aikpokpo Martins, who requested scrutiny of Kalu’s NYSC participation and his academic credentials at the Law School.

In response, the two advocacy groups urged the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Police Force to investigate the motivations behind the original petition. Speaking at a press conference on Sunday, Solomon Semeka and Ibrahim Akawe Joseph, conveners of the groups, suggested that the issue may be rooted in political rivalry as the 2027 governorship election in Abia State approaches.

“We wish to remind the public that a petition on this same matter was previously submitted to the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee. After a review, the committee dismissed the petition for lacking merit,” the groups stated.

They asserted that the ongoing controversy appears to be influenced by political interests as the election draws nearer. “This is a deliberate attempt to defame a public official. We are submitting a petition to the relevant security agencies so that those responsible can be held accountable,” they said.

The groups also encouraged the public to verify information circulating online before sharing it.
