Kano State Government Partners with Agencies for Fund Distribution Following Market Fire

KANO, Nigeria — The Kano State Government has enlisted the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC), the Nigeria Police Force, and other security agencies to oversee the distribution of N8 billion in federal assistance to victims of a fire at the Singer Market. This move aims to ensure transparency and fairness in the allocation of funds.

The distribution committee, led by Alhaji Umar Faruk, the Secretary to the State Government, visited the market to assess the damage. Faruk emphasized the committee’s commitment to integrity in its operations.

“Justice and fairness will guide our distribution of support to the victims,” Faruk stated. He urged affected individuals to be honest when reporting their losses to facilitate an equitable process.

“We expect every affected marketer to be truthful in declaring their losses and the remaining goods, ensuring that all are treated justly,” he added.

Barrister Mohammad Zakari Junaid, chairman of the Kano Singer Market, reiterated that the involvement of anti-corruption and security agencies is crucial for maintaining fairness in the distribution process. He assured the public that the funds will be used responsibly.

In related comments, ACP Jauro, representing the Commissioner of Police, affirmed the police’s commitment to maintaining security in the market to support Kano’s status as a commercial hub in sub-Saharan Africa.

Sarkin Fadan Kano, Alhaji Ado Kurawa, expressed the Emirate’s sympathy for the business community affected by the fire and called on traders to collaborate with the committee to ensure a successful execution of their responsibilities.
