Keary’s surprise take on burning NRL issue

Sydney Roosters star Luke Keary has come to the defence of the NRL’s concussion process, suggesting that doctors are needed to save players from themselves.

Keary is no stranger to head knocks, having suffered a series of concussions that even sparked early retirement talk, and played wearing headgear for the first time at the weekend.

While he says he “feels better than (his) old self” despite a series of head knocks, Keary backed the NRL’s current concussion process after it came under fire in round one.

“We’re not just going to stick our hands up and go, ‘Oh yeah, I’ve got a knock take me off the field’, someone’s going to have to drag you off the field,” he said.

“You see it all the time with players that are knocked out, they don’t want to go off the field.

“I don’t know about (the question of) can the NRL trust coaches and clubs. Can you trust the players? Probably not.”

Keary revealed that the decision to wear the headgear came after conversations with Roosters coach Trent Robinson.

“Robbo’s tossed it up to me a couple of times now,” he said.

“I hadn’t really thought about it, there was one floating around at training during the week last week (and) I chucked it on, so I felt alright.

“Like Trent said, if there’s anything you can do to help with knocks, you may as well try it.

Keary said the added protection made him feel “a little bit” more confident during games.

“You don’t really think about it during the game,” he said.

“I guess it stops the little elbows and hits and things like that rather than the big ones.”
