Kebbi: Gov Idris orders investigation into school fire outbreak

A committee will be formed to investigate the fire that broke out at the Nurul Haqq Quranic and Arabic School in Birnin Kebbi, the state governor announced over the weekend.
The fire occurred Saturday evening, damaging several hostels and classrooms and causing panic among students and residents. Governor Nasir Idris, who was en route to break his Ramadan fast, spotted thick smoke along the roadside. Upon discovering the source was the school, he directed his convoy to stop, ordered the immediate evacuation of students, and alerted the Kebbi State Fire Service and other emergency responders.
Governor Idris remained at the scene for several hours despite observing the fast, overseeing the safe evacuation of more than 140 students and ensuring they were accounted for. Firefighters battled the blaze for approximately three to four hours before containing it.
In a statement following the incident, Governor Idris expressed gratitude that no lives were lost. “The safety of our children remains paramount to this administration,” he said, emphasizing the seriousness of the situation. He commended the Kebbi State Fire Service for their prompt and professional response, noting their efforts prevented what could have been a significant tragedy.
Parents and guardians have been assured that all students are safe and have been temporarily relocated to the school’s main branch while assessments of the damaged structures are conducted. An investigative committee is expected to submit its findings in the coming weeks.
