Lagos Flags Off Statewide Measles, Rubella Vaccination Exercise

Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, the Wife of the Governor of Lagos State, recently inaugurated a statewide Measles and Rubella vaccination exercise aimed at protecting children from vaccine-preventable diseases. This initiative marks a significant advancement in the state’s health sector, introducing the Measles and Rubella vaccine into the routine immunization program to enhance disease prevention and reduce childhood mortality rates.
The launch took place at the Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Secretariat and included participation from healthcare professionals, community leaders, parents, and children—all demonstrating widespread support for the vaccination effort. Dr. Sanwo-Olu, represented by Mrs. Oluremi Hamzat, the Wife of the Deputy Governor, emphasized the government’s commitment to improving healthcare through strong partnerships, community engagement, and effective immunization strategies.
During her address, she discussed the critical role of the measles and rubella vaccines in preventing serious health complications that can arise from these diseases, including blindness, brain damage, miscarriages, and even death. She stressed the need for early and complete vaccination to ensure the well-being of children.
Parents and guardians were called upon to ensure that their children are vaccinated, as healthcare workers plan to conduct door-to-door visits aimed at reaching all eligible children. This proactive approach seeks to achieve comprehensive vaccination coverage across all communities in Lagos State.
A notable event during the flag-off ceremony was the actual administration of the vaccine to children aged between nine months and fourteen years, symbolizing the official start of the vaccination campaign throughout the state. This exercise underlines the Lagos State Government’s ongoing dedication to prioritizing healthcare, laying the groundwork for a healthier and more productive population.
In summary, the Measles and Rubella vaccination initiative plays a vital role in safeguarding public health and reflects the government’s consistent effort to enhance healthcare delivery in Lagos State. By promoting vaccinations and encouraging community participation, the program aims to protect the future of its children from preventable diseases and improve overall public health outcomes.
