Lagos State Government Announces Traffic Diversions for Bridge Repairs

LAGOS — The Lagos State Government has instituted traffic diversions to facilitate repair work on the Apongbon Bridge and adjacent service lane, according to a statement released Wednesday by the Ministry of Transportation. The repairs are being undertaken by the Federal Ministry of Works due to the deteriorating condition of the asphalt.

Transportation Commissioner Oluwaseun Osiyemi signed the statement, which indicates that the work will commence on Thursday, February 5 and is expected to last for six weeks, concluding on Thursday, March 19, 2026.

As repairs begin, sections of the affected corridors will be temporarily closed to ensure safety and facilitate the efficient execution of the project. Motorists are advised to utilize the following alternative routes:

Inbound Traffic Changes

  • Motorists approaching from Inner Marina should proceed to the Apongbon under-bridge roundabout, connect to Adeniji Adele Road, and continue through Ebute Ero before using the ramp to Apongbon/Eko Bridge.
  • Vehicles traveling from Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS), Third Mainland Bridge, and Victoria Island should continue over Apongbon Bridge to reach Eko Bridge.

Outbound Traffic Changes

  • For outbound traffic from Eko Bridge towards Inner Marina, motorists should divert via the Ebute Ero Ramp, travel through Adeniji Adele Road, and navigate to the Apongbon under-bridge roundabout.
  • Traffic from Eko Bridge heading toward Outer Marina, Victoria Island, and Third Mainland Bridge can continue on Apongbon Bridge without disruption.

During the inbound repair phase, construction will later shift to the outbound side of the bridge after completion.

The Lagos State Government is appealing to motorists for patience and cooperation during the repairs, emphasizing the necessity of these temporary diversions to ensure the project’s successful completion. Traffic management officials will be stationed along the affected routes to direct vehicles and minimize disruption.
