Lagos has no pension arrears, retirees remain priority – Sanwo-Olu

Lagos Governor Assures No Outstanding Pension Arrears
LAGOS — Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State confirmed Monday that there are no outstanding pension arrears, reinforcing his administration’s commitment to the welfare and dignity of retirees.
Sanwo-Olu’s remarks followed a courtesy visit from the executive management team of the Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate (PTAD), led by Executive Secretary Tolulope Odunaiya, at Lagos House in Marina.
In a statement issued by the Governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gbenga Akosile, Sanwo-Olu emphasized the significance of honoring pensioners, stating his administration prioritizes fairness, equity, and respect for those who have served the government.
“We in Lagos State recognize and value the contributions of our pensioners. They have devoted significant parts of their lives to public service, and we remain committed to treating them with the dignity they deserve,” he said.
Discussing the state’s reforms under the contributory pension scheme, Sanwo-Olu noted that Lagos State has fulfilled all pension liabilities. “Currently, Lagos State is the only state without any pension arrears. Over the past three years, we have settled all outstanding obligations. No pensioner can claim that we owe them years of unpaid benefits,” he added.
The governor stated that retirees with complete documentation are now able to receive their pensions within two to three months after their service ends. “For those who have dedicated their lives to public service, the least we can do is to provide a responsive system that assures them of our appreciation in their later years,” he said.
Sanwo-Olu committed to continued collaboration with PTAD to enhance the welfare of pensioners residing in Lagos State.
During her remarks, PTAD Executive Secretary Tolulope Odunaiya highlighted that nearly 200,000 pensioners under the Defined Benefit Scheme live in Lagos and called for sustained cooperation with the state government. She also discussed reforms approved in August 2025 by President Bola Tinubu, which aim to strengthen social protection and promote the dignity of senior citizens.
