Lagos residents protest epileptic power supply

Lagos Residents Protest Persistent Electricity Outages
LAGOS — Residents took to the streets on Friday to voice their frustration over ongoing electricity outages, labeling the city’s power supply as “epileptic” and inadequate for daily life and business operations.
Video footage shared on social media captured dozens of protesters, primarily young people, marching through the Fadeyi area. Many carried placards with messages demanding consistent electricity, chanting for change as they moved through the streets.
The demonstrators criticized what they termed the collapse of Nigeria’s power sector, asserting that erratic electricity supply is severely undermining livelihoods and exacerbating difficulties for many in Lagos. Printed messages on their placards included “No More Estimated Billing,” “No More Epileptic Power Supply,” and “You’re Destroying Businesses; Give Us Regular Light.”
One protester declared, “We are not asking for too much. Give us light!” echoing a common sentiment among the crowd.
Local business owners joined the protest to emphasize the detrimental effects of unreliable power on their operations. Many noted that the increased dependence on fuel-powered generators has driven up operational costs significantly. A shop owner involved in the protest lamented, “We cannot continue like this. Every day we spend money on fuel because there is no electricity. Many small businesses are closing because they cannot cope.”
This demonstration underscores rising public discontent regarding electricity provision in Lagos, with residents calling on authorities and power operators to ensure a stable and reliable supply.
