Lagos Seals NITEL Building Over Raw Sewage Discharge

Lagos Government Seals NITEL Building for Sewage Discharge Violations
The Lagos State Government has closed the Nigerian Telecommunications Limited (NITEL) building located on Marcathy Street in the Obalende area of Lagos Island. This action follows reports of raw sewage being deliberately discharged into public drainage systems.
In a statement released on Friday, Commissioner Tokunbo Wahab of the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources confirmed that the operation was conducted by the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office in collaboration with KAI operatives.
“The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO), in a joint operation with KAI, sealed off the NITEL building on Friday, February 20, 2026, due to the deliberate dumping of raw sewage into public drains,” the statement read. “This activity poses environmental hazards and health risks to residents.”
The statement also noted the presence of unauthorized occupants within the old NITEL building. “The structure contains squatters who lack proper authorization and coordination,” it added.
The Lagos State Government has urged residents to engage in proper wastewater management and adhere to good hygiene practices to safeguard public health.
The statement concluded with a reminder that any actions causing environmental nuisance will result in appropriate penalties and possible legal action.
