Landlord arrested for de-roofing tenant’s apartment in Rivers

Ghanaian Landlord Arrested After Removing Roof of Tenant’s Apartment in Rivers State
The Rivers State Police Command has apprehended a Ghanaian landlord, Samuel Frimpong, for allegedly removing the roof of his tenant’s residence on Chief Chike Street in Mgbuoba, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area.
The incident reportedly occurred after the tenant, Anozie Tochukwu, failed to vacate the property within a two-week grace period. Tochukwu, who has resided in the apartment since January 2024, stated that he has consistently paid his rent.
In late 2025, Frimpong notified Tochukwu of planned renovations and indicated that the tenant’s lease, set to expire in January 2026, would not be renewed. To facilitate his relocation, Tochukwu provided proof of payment for a new apartment on February 1 and requested a 14-day extension to move.
However, on February 3, Tochukwu’s wife informed him that the landlord had removed the roof of their home. Following the removal, heavy rain inundated the apartment, damaging their belongings and leaving Tochukwu’s pregnant wife and their two young children exposed to the elements. Tochukwu estimated the loss of his property at approximately 25 million Naira.
Among the items reported damaged were electronics, furniture, personal certificates, books, medications, and savings accumulated over nine months.
Confirming Frimpong’s arrest, Rivers State Police spokesperson Grace Iringe-Koko stated, “The landlord has been arrested and is currently in police custody. Investigations are ongoing, and he may be arraigned after the process is complete.”
