Late Yamal penalty earns Barcelona draw at Newcastle in Champions League | Football News

Barcelona Draws 1-1 with Newcastle United in Champions League First Leg
Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal converted a penalty in the final moments of the match to secure a 1-1 draw against Newcastle United in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League last-16 tie on Tuesday. The result came after Newcastle’s Harvey Barnes had given the home side a late lead.
In the 86th minute, Barnes volleyed in Jacob Murphy’s cross, seemingly setting Newcastle up for a narrow advantage heading into the second leg. However, a foul by Malick Thiaw on Dani Olmo in the box led to the decisive moment in stoppage time. Yamal stepped up to take the penalty, placing the ball in the bottom corner as Newcastle goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale dove the wrong way.
Earlier in the match, Newcastle’s Joelinton appeared to have scored when he netted a rebound off Barnes’s shot, which had hit the post, but the goal was disallowed for offside.
The second leg of the tie will take place at Barcelona’s home ground on March 18.
In other Champions League action on Tuesday, Galatasaray edged Liverpool 1-0 in Istanbul, with Mario Lemina scoring from a diving header in the early minutes of the match. The Turkish side will head to Anfield with a slim advantage for the return leg.
Meanwhile, Bayern Munich dominated Atalanta, winning 6-1 in Bergamo. The German club established a three-goal lead within the first 25 minutes, asserting control for the remainder of the match.
Atletico Madrid also secured a significant victory, thrashing Tottenham Hotspur 5-2 in a remarkable first half, further complicating the Premier League side’s chances in the second leg. An eventful night for Spurs saw their young goalkeeper, Antonin Kinsky, substituted after conceding three early goals.
