Legend’s emotional tribute floors Aussie star

Jason Kubler has been left blushing after receiving an incredible endorsement from proud Aussie tennis great John Fitzgerald following his latest win.

After an impressive run at the United Cup, Kubler continued his good form with a 7-6 (7-2), 7-5 win over Argentina’s Tomas martin Etcheverry at the Adelaide International 2.

Kubler’s performance left Fitzgerald emotional, with the Aussie great’s voice trembling as he paid tribute to the world No.86.

“I’ve watched a lot of Aussies play tennis. Tonight, for me, was one of the few times where I’ve been so proud to watch a young Australian play, well done,” an emotional Fitzgerald told Kubler.

“It’s very easy for us as Australians to look at young players like you and expect a lot.

“You’ve been through a long journey, you’ve had a lot of injuries, I don’t think you know yet how good a player you are. I know you’re 29, but you’re a young 29.

“That level tonight, for me, was super high. You can play like this for another six or eight years I think.”

Kubler was somewhat embarrassed by the reception he received, responding with a typically humble answer.

”Mate, you’re gassing me up too much right now,” he said.

“I would love to (play another six to eight years), but the most important thing for me is to stay out on the court. Like you said, I honestly don’t know how good I can be.

“I’ve had stops and starts for a while, so hopefully I can keep going and keep climbing up in the ranks a little bit.”

Kubler will face Serbia’s Miomir Kecmanovic in the second round at the Adelaide International 2 later this week.
