LIVE: Aussie batter spills beans on fiery selection fight

Like this series, the Edgbaston Test opened the 2019 series. It was marked a return to the Test arena for David Warner, Cameron Bancroft and Steve Smith after the ball tampering saga.

After winning the toss and batting first, Australia lost Warner and Bancroft cheaply, and then Usman Khawaja after drinks. Smith and Travis Head got Australia through to lunch at 3-83.

After lunch though, Stuart Broad (5-86) and Chris Woakes (3-58) ripped in and dismissed Head, Matthew Wade, Tim Paine, James Pattinson and Pat Cummins. Smith remained unbeaten on 66 at tea.

After the evening session was delayed due to some ordinary Birmingham weather, Smith and Peter Siddle put on 88 for the ninth wicket, before Siddle was out for a hard-earned 44.

Smith meanwhile, shielded Nathan Lyon for nearly 12 overs to make a fantastic ton, before falling in the first over after the new ball was taken for a stunning 144.

The English openers Rory Burns and Jason Roy had two overs at the end of the day to navigate, which they did.
