Locals recount how bandits killed 14 soldiers, eight vigilantes in Plateau community

Kanam Development Association Reports Deadly Bandit Attack in Plateau State

The Kanam Development Association (KADA) has reported a deadly attack by armed bandits on soldiers and local vigilantes in the Wanka community, located in the Kyaram district of Plateau State. The incident occurred on Friday, resulting in the deaths of 14 soldiers and eight vigilantes, with several others injured.

KADA officials, including chairman Barr. Garba G. Aliyu and secretary ND Shehu Kanam, provided details, stating that security personnel were ambushed while conducting routine patrols in surrounding communities, including Garga and Gyambau. The patrol team comprised military personnel and local vigilantes operating in two vehicles.

The statement expressed sorrow over the loss of life, noting that among the deceased were two senior military officers. While it acknowledged that some bandits were neutralized during the confrontation, KADA emphasized the profound impact of losing defenders in the line of duty.

In addition to the fatalities, the bandits reportedly looted properties worth millions of naira, including a significant number of cattle belonging to local residents. KADA highlighted that this incident exacerbates the suffering of vulnerable rural communities already facing significant challenges.

The association pointed out that these attacks are not isolated incidents; the Garga, Kyaram, Gyambau, and neighboring areas have endured persistent violence, including cattle rustling and kidnappings for the past three to four years. KADA noted that armed groups appear to operate with increasing impunity in these border regions.

Despite multiple appeals to authorities regarding the escalating security crisis, KADA stated that the situation continues to deteriorate. The organization urged government officials at all levels to act promptly to mitigate the threat to these communities.

KADA called for the immediate deployment of additional security personnel to Garga, Kyaram, Gyambau, Wanka, and adjacent areas. It also advocated for the establishment of a permanent security presence to deter further attacks and enhance coordinated operations along the volatile border shared with Taraba and Bauchi states.
