I remember in my former place of work back then in Nigeria, our chairman had a penchant for openly criticizing his Managers at management meetings. He’s one of Nigeria’s five richest men, so he’s actually egoistic. If he says something, and you object his views, your termination letter would be waiting for you. But one day, he criticized one of the managers, a female, about she not acting on a directive he’d given earlier. The meeting was very tense, cos he just kept on yabbing the lady endlessly. Once he’d finished, the lady just respectfully got up and looked him straight in the face, and she told him that since he was insistent on her carrying out the directive he’d given her earlier, and since the directive conflicted with her professional ethics, she would forward her resignation letter to HR, with immediate effect. She said she was not prepared to lose her right to practice her profession in Nigeria simply by blindly following his misguided directive. My chairman was shocked. We all thought he was going to definitely fire her for daring to challenge him. But lo and behold, baba just told HR to move her from Victoria Island headquarters to head the new mainland office in Ikeja GRA. She said she was prepared for the worst, so she decided to put her foot down, regardless of the consequence.
