Man arrested for spreading disinformation aimed at inciting hostility towards the Nigeria Police

The Nigeria Police Force has taken swift action in response to the growing issue of fake news and disinformation, apprehending a suspect for allegedly spreading false and inciting content on social media. 

 

On December 8, 2024, operatives in Edo State arrested 38-year-old Destiny Ekhorutomuen in Uhunmwonde Local Government Area. Ekhorutomuen is accused of using multiple social media accounts to circulate disinformation aimed at inciting hostility towards the Nigeria Police.

 

The Police have reiterated their commitment to upholding national peace and security, stating that the spread of false information erodes public trust, undermines social cohesion, and poses significant threats to national stability. The Nigeria Police Force emphasized its zero tolerance for any actions that threaten the integrity of the nation or tarnish the reputation of law enforcement and other government institutions.

In a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Police warned that the misuse of social media and communication platforms to spread fake news or incite violence is a criminal act punishable under the law. Citizens were urged to be responsible in their use of information and to act in a manner that supports the unity and peace of the country.
