Man Punished for Assaulting Parents, Wife in Abia State
Ohafia, Abia State — A man identified as Sunny Uma Okwara has been subjected to 30 strokes of the cane by a group of women in his community for allegedly assaulting his elderly parents. The punishment was administered by the Nde Umuada, a traditional organization comprised of married women and daughters in the area.
Okwara has also been accused of physically assaulting his wife. In addition to the corporal punishment, he was fined 20,000 naira, which is designated for traditional cleansing rites, as the Umuada deemed his actions a sacrilege that could not be tolerated.
According to reports, Okwara, a resident of Amaekpu in Ohafia, had a history of physically assaulting his parents over minor disagreements. The elderly couple sought intervention from the Umuada, prompting an investigation and subsequent judgment.
A video circulating online shows Okwara lying on the ground while he is flogged by members of the women’s group, who instructed him to refrain from further violence against both his parents and wife. He reportedly agreed to comply with their directives.
The Umuada emphasized the need for a community response to such behavior, characterizing Okwara’s actions as unacceptable.
