MDCN Suspends 3 Doctors Over Chimamanda’s Son’s Death

MDCN Suspends Three Doctors Following Investigation into Child’s Death
The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) has issued interim suspension orders against three doctors in connection with the death of 21-month-old Master Nkanu Adichie-Esege, the son of renowned author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.
The doctors involved are Dr. Tosin Majekodunmi, Medical Director at Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital; Dr. Titus Ogundare, an anesthesiologist at the same facility; and Dr. Atinuke Uwajeh, Chief Medical Director of Atlantis Pediatric Hospital.
The suspensions will remain in effect pending the outcome of the Medical and Dental Practitioners’ Disciplinary Tribunal, which is tasked with adjudicating the cases as per the council’s statutory authority.
During its 25th session held on February 17-18 in Abuja, the panel determined that a prima facie case of medical negligence had been established against the three doctors. The MDCN emphasized that its findings are preliminary and do not equate to a final determination of liability.
This investigation was initiated after a formal complaint was lodged with the MDCN on January 16, 2026. Medical practitioners from both hospitals provided responses to the complaint, submitting affidavits and delivering oral testimony before the MDCN’s Investigative Panel.
Additionally, the panel identified professional misconduct involving ten other practitioners from Atlantis Pediatric Hospital.
All medical personnel involved are entitled to a fair hearing before the Disciplinary Tribunal, where evidence will be examined and final decisions rendered.
