NAFDAC, NOA Release Survey On Dangers Of Alcohol In Sachet, Pet Bottles –

Agency Raises Alarm Over Underage Drinking in Nigeria

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), in partnership with the National Orientation Agency, has expressed grave concern regarding the rising incidence of underage drinking in Nigeria.

A recent nationwide survey conducted across six states found that over half of minors have the ability to procure alcohol independently, often purchasing it in sachets and small plastic bottles. These containers are not only inexpensive but also easy to conceal and widely available.

The survey also revealed that nearly half of the minors gain access to alcohol through friends, relatives, or social gatherings, making alcohol a frequently encountered substance among youth. While the majority reported drinking occasionally, a significant portion engage in daily consumption, with some participants indicating instances of binge drinking.

Experts attribute this troubling trend to several factors, including peer pressure, familial influences, and the role of social media. The compact packaging of alcoholic beverages further facilitates concealment of consumption among minors.

Health professionals caution that early exposure to alcohol can impair brain development, increase the risk of addiction, and lead to serious issues such as depression, violence, risky sexual behaviors, and diminished academic performance. The immediate risks associated with underage drinking are severe, including alcohol poisoning and accidents, while long-term consequences may involve liver damage, hypertension, and a heightened risk of cancer.

In response to the alarming findings, the Nigerian Senate has called on NAFDAC to enforce a strict ban on sachet alcohol and containers smaller than 200 milliliters, while also urging heightened national awareness campaigns. The Federal Ministry of Health has been asked to formulate a National Alcohol Policy that prohibits these small pack sizes.

NAFDAC Director-General Professor Mojisola Adeyeye affirmed the agency’s commitment to safeguarding the health of young Nigerians from the perils of alcohol abuse.
