NAFDAC seals 2 chemical shops in Edo

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has shut down two chemical shops in Benin City, Edo State, for allegedly operating without proper licensing and failing to adhere to safety standards.

The affected shops, Golden Juliros Nigeria Ltd on Evbiemwen Street and Onebamchi Chemicals at Ramat Park Market, were closed on Thursday, December 19, by NAFDAC officials from the agency’s Investigation and Enforcement Unit in Asaba and Edo State.

Esther Itua, the Edo Coordinator of NAFDAC, revealed that the shops had been under surveillance for years and had repeatedly ignored advice to register as licensed chemical dealers.

“One of NAFDAC’s statutory mandates is to monitor and control the manufacture, distribution, sale, advertisement, and use of regulated products, including chemicals,” Itua stated.

She explained that obtaining a chemical listing license requires meeting specific criteria, including registering as a company, maintaining a proper warehouse for storage, and employing qualified staff. According to Itua, the shops failed to meet these conditions, rendering their operations non-compliant.

Due to the scale of the facilities involved, a task force from Asaba was brought in to assist in the operation. NAFDAC emphasized its commitment to ensuring the safe distribution and sale of chemicals in line with regulatory standards.
