NDLEA unveils new drug control plan to tackle abuse, close gaps

Nigeria Unveils New Drug Control Master Plan for 2026-2030

ABUJA — Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (retired), Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), announced the launch of Nigeria’s new National Drug Control Master Plan (NDCMP) for 2026-2030. He stated that this initiative aims to enhance the country’s efforts to combat drug abuse and trafficking.

Marwa made his comments during a presentation at the NDLEA headquarters, where he received the final evaluation report of the 2021-2025 drug control strategy. He emphasized that the new plan is structured to improve existing measures and address identified deficiencies in drug control operations.

“The National Drug Control Master Plan 2026-2030 will fortify Nigeria’s ongoing drug control efforts,” Marwa said, particularly in relation to public health and national security concerns. His remarks followed a review of the NDCMP 2021-2025, which assessed Nigeria’s approach to drug-related challenges over the past five years.

The NDLEA chairman commended the evaluation team, noting their excellent work on assessing the implementation of the previous master plan. Findings from this assessment will inform strategies in the new policy framework. Marwa assured that, once fully implemented, the NDCMP 2026-2030 will address gaps in drug demand reduction, while also aiming to lessen substance abuse and enhance prevention programs.

This development is part of the ongoing government efforts to revise national drug policies and to strengthen enforcement and rehabilitation systems. Authorities indicate that the new plan will also improve coordination among stakeholders and bolster Nigeria’s overall response to drug-related challenges.
