NEMA Trains Corps Members On Disaster Risk Reduction

NEMA Enhances Disaster Preparedness Through Youth Training Initiative

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) is bolstering grassroots disaster preparedness by empowering National Youths Service Corps Emergency Management Vanguards (EMVs) with crucial skills in Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR).

In a statement released Sunday via its official X handle, NEMA’s Enugu Operations Office announced the completion of a “Training of Trainers” program held on Friday at the Aninri Local Government Council, located in Aninri Local Government Area.

This initiative is part of Director-General Zubaida Umar’s vision to enhance community engagement and foster a culture of disaster preparedness and safety nationwide.

Participants in the training covered several key topics, including NEMA’s mandate in prevention, mitigation, and preparedness, prevalent disasters in the South-East region, the roles of EMVs in disaster risk management, basic first aid, and fire safety management. The program included interactive practical sessions emphasizing these concepts.

The EMVs were urged to promote disaster risk reduction advocacy within their communities through town hall meetings and awareness campaigns in public venues such as motor parks, churches, and markets.

In his concluding remarks, Mr. Ukpe Chukwunalu Gift, the EMV President for Aninri LGA, thanked NEMA for its ongoing support in training and retraining members. A key highlight of the program included practical demonstrations of basic first aid procedures and the proper use of fire extinguishers.
