Nigerian Telecom Operators Challenge Senate Claims on Infrastructure

Nigerian telecom companies, including MTN Nigeria, Airtel, Globacom, and T2 Mobile, have rejected recent statements from the Senate regarding inadequate telecom infrastructure in the country. The operators described the Senate’s claims as misleading and urged lawmakers to consult the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) for accurate information.

Engr. Gbenga Adebayo, chairman of the Association of Licensed Telecom Operators in Nigeria (ALTON), underscored the importance of relying on data from the NCC. He questioned the basis of the Senate’s assertions about the shortcomings in telecom services.

“Upon which survey or statistics is the Senate basing its position?” Adebayo asked. “Currently, over 70% of the country is covered with 3G and 4G technology, while 5G accounts for approximately 11%. The remainder operates on 2G.”

Adebayo emphasized that 2G technology is sufficient for electronic transmission of results. He expressed concern over the potential consequences of imposing restrictions based on unfounded claims about infrastructure.

While acknowledging that operational challenges exist in certain areas—primarily due to security concerns—he noted that these issues should not deter collaborative efforts to enhance coverage. “It is essential for all stakeholders to come together to develop solutions for these regions,” he said.

This stance is consistent with the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) position in 2022, which indicated that results could still be uploaded electronically in areas with network coverage, despite existing challenges.
